A CABLE DRIVE SYSTEM FOR A PRINTING MACHINE ABSTRACT In a printing machine of the kind having a print carrier supported for linear movement along a path of printing, there is provided a cable drive system comprising a motor mounted on the carrier, a capstan member rotatably supported on the carrier and driven by the motor and a single continuous cable assembled to convert rotary movement of the capstan member to linear motion of the carrier. The capstan member is especially structured to accommodate the wound support of a first series of cable coils and a second series of cable coils wrapped in opposite directions, such that, the last wound coil of each series meet along the capstan member and cable may be wound and unwound simultaneously when the capstan member is rotating. An end length of the cable is stretched taut from the last wound coil of each series and the two cable end lengths extend in opposite directions to a related left and right side frame member where the ends of the cable are firmly anchored. Rotating the capstan member causes one of the end lengths to become tensioned for exerting a pulling force transmitted to the print carrier through the take-up winding of tensioned cable and the print carrier linearly moves along the path of printing in the direction of the tensioned cable. During linear movement of the print carrier, the length portions of cable extending off the capstan member remain stationary and are orientated with respect to the helical angle of the coils, such that, winding and unwinding of cable is accomplished without any cable interference and mechanical drift.
