A cable operated sander for a vehicle 10 provides a container 20 which is adapted to carry sand or similar gritty material, and is typically located in a position near either the front or rear wheels, depending on the availability of front or rear-wheel drive. A valve 40 is carried adjacent to a drain defined in the base of the container, and is operated by a control cable 60. The control cable allows for remote operation of the valve, typically by operation of a dashboard-mounted control. Delivery tubing 80 allows the movement of sand from the container to a position immediately in front of a tire, thereby increasing the frictional contact between the tire and the pavement.
