A portable safety sheath for wire rope cables is disclosed. A narrow strip of strong fabric has a series of fasteners along its long edges. The fabric strip may be wrapped around a cable being used with an implement such as a winch, and the edges of the strip may then be connected using the fasteners, such that the fabric strip forms a continuous sheath around the cable. In the event that a strand of the cable should rupture while the cable is under tension, the sheath surrounding the cable will absorb the energy released by the rupturing strand, preventing the broken strand segments from whipping outwardly from the cable. After use, the safety sheath may be easily removed from the cable, then folded or rolled up for convenient storage or transport.
