A system and method for determining whether specific cable television connections belong to authorized subscribers or to unauthorized connections is provided. The system includes the placement of a dwelling unit transceiver in the cable signal circuit, in the dwellings of authorized subscribers. The dwelling unit transceiver is configured, upon receipt of an inquiry, to transmit an answer that contains specific identifying content, unique to the particular subscriber, or at least unique to a particular subscriber in a particular subscription area. An auditor is provided with a portable transceiver configured for sending inquiries and for receiving answers , and providing an indication to the auditor of the specific identifying content. The auditor, checking the connections for a particular dwelling, in which all authorized subscribers have been provided with their own dwelling unit transceivers, will discover unauthorized connections, which will provide upon inquiry either no answer or an answer with specific identifying content inappropriate for any authorized subscribers for that particular dwelling.
