ABSTRACT In a rotary kiln for calcining petroleum coke a head for the calcining operation is provided by a gas or oil burner at the coke outlet end of the furnace and by burning of the evolved volatiles by means of air injected through the kiln wall. Kiln operating conditions, particularly burner operation are controlled in response to temperature in the bed of coke towards the outlet end of the kiln, the temperature being measured by an optical pyrometer. There is a possibility of a false temperature reading due to the presence of smoke in the field monitored by the pyrometer, as the result of burning of volatiles. To avoid this difficulty a second pyrometer monitors the coke bed temperature at a point upstream (in direction of coke flow), and corrective action is taken when the second pyrometer signal becomes unstable. Such corrective action usually involves increase of air supply to move the zone of burning volatiles upstream (away from the field surveyed by the first pyrometer).
