The subject invention provides an isolated DNA fragment, comprising a sequence of nucleotides encoding the .gamma.-subunit of a mammalian calcium channel, wherein the sequence of nucleotides is selected from sequences of nucleotides encoding a protein having the sequence of amino acids set forth in Figure 1, sequences of nucleotides that encode a .gamma.-subunit of a mammalian calcium channel and hybridize under non-stringent conditions to DNA encoding the protein set forth in Figure 1, or sequences of nucleotides that encode a .gamma.-subunit of a mammalian calcium channel and hybridize under non-stringent conditions to DNA having the sequence set forth in Figure 1. The invention provides a useful tool in studying the function of Ca+2 channels in mammalian cells.
