ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for manufacturing cal- cium silicate and/or aluminate based products such as Por- tland cement or aluminous cements. The raw meal is heated to a temperature less than that at which the bothersome impurities such as alkalines, chlorine and sulfur are vola tilized in a preheater-decarbonator 2 and a rotating kiln 3, then the heated raw meal is further heated, in a plasma furnace 1, to a temperature higher than the temperature at which the impurities are volatilized, for example above 1950°C, and more than 80 % of the material is in fusion, in the presence of a reducing gas which subsequently is not brought into contact with the cooling product or only after purification, The process may be used for the manufacture of clinkers of improved quality and/or with lower energy consumption.
