A calcium salt protective coating formed in situ by combining fatty acids with lime, also the associated method of forming the protective coating in situ. The fatty acids are preferably vegetable fatty acids such as from soapstock byproduct skimmings produced during the manufacture of vegetable oil. Experimental testing has shown that the protective coating is substantially impervious to moisture. The protective coating is a suitable covering for hay bales, silage, coal piles, and road salt piles. Further experimental testing has shown that the present invention is also suited to environmental soil bioremediation ("landfarming") using microbes, in which the fatty acid ingredient, in addition to being used in formation of a protective coating that inhibits introduction of oxygen into the soil being treated, is also used as a carbon source for the microbial activity.
L'invention concerne un revêtement protecteur à base de sel de calcium formé in situ par combinaison d'acides gras et de chaux, ainsi qu'un procédé de préparation associé permettant de former ledit revêtement in situ. Les acides gras sont, de préférence, des acides gras de légumes, tels que des écrémages de sous-produits de pâte de neutralisation produits pendant la fabrication d'huile végétale. Des tests expérimentaux ont démontré que le revêtement protecteur est sensiblement étanche à l'humidité. Le revêtement protecteur est conçu pour recouvrir des balles de foin, des produits d'ensilage, des tas de charbon et des tas de sel de voirie. De plus, des tests expérimentaux ont démontré que le revêtement selon l'invention est également conçu pour la biorestauration de sol écologique ("biorégénération du sol") au moyen de microbes, l'ingrédient à base d'acides gras étant non seulement utilisé pour la préparation d'un revêtement protecteur inhibant l'introduction d'oxygène dans le sol traité mais également utilisé comme source de carbone destinée à l'activité microbienne.
