ABSTRACT IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO A CALENDER A calender has a polyurethane coated roll 10 and a co-operating steel roll 20 which together form a nip for treating a web of paper. The polyurethane coated roll 10 is cooled by means of a cooling fluid passing through a cooling channel 12 within the roll 10 to a temperature T which satisfies the formula Image where V is the velocity of the web being treated in metres/minute and P is the pressure applied to the web in kp/cm of roll length and T is the temperature at the surface of the roll 10 in degrees C.
