A catalytic converter (1030) for a tailpipe (22) which further reduces vehicle exhaust emissions from exhaust emission systems (10) and that will meet the more stringent emission requirements of state and federal government regulations. The tailpipe catalytic converter (1030) includes a ceramic or steel housing (32) of relative small size, having a diameter in the range of 1/2 inch to 8 inches and a length of 3/4 inches to 11 inches. The housing (32) includes a matrix core (34) of catalytic layered materials which react with the exhaust emission pollutants, such as NOx, NMHC, HC and CO. These pollutants are further reduced and oxidized by the catalytic converter (1030) in the tailpipe ty the typical catalytic materials of platinum, palladium, rhodium, or the like contained within the honeycombed or meshed layers of the matrix core (34). The catalytic coverter (1030) is lodged within the interior of the tailpipe (22) adjacent the open end or as an extension to the end of the tailpipe (22). The tailpipe catalytic converter (1030) is held in place by any suitable devices (38), such as a clamp, mounting screws, mounting brackets, or the like. The converter includes a device (1050') for relieving back pressure. Also, the tailpipe catalytic converter can be used for other vehicles, such as trucks, and motocycles or other gas compression engines, i.e. lawn mowers.

La présente invention concerne un pot catalytique (1030) pour tubulure arrière d'échappement (22), réduisant encore plus les émissions de gaz d'échappement des véhicules par les systèmes d'émission de gaz d'échappement (10). Cette invention est conforme aux dispositions légales et administratives locales ou nationales les plus exigeantes concernant les gaz d'échappement. Ce pot catalytique (1030) pour tubulure arrière comporte une enveloppe en céramique ou en acier (32). Les dimensions de cette enveloppe sont relativement faibles, soit un diamètre compris entre 1/2 pouce et 8 pouces pour une longueur compris entre 3/4 pouce et 11 pouces. Le noyau à structure matricielle (34) contenu dans cette enveloppe (32) est fait de couches de matériau catalytique qui réagissent avec les polluants de gaz d'échappement et notamment les NO¿x?, NMHC, HC et CO. Ces polluants subissent ensuite une oxydoréduction au niveau du pot catalytique (1030) de tubulure arrière (22) provoquée par les catalyseurs conventionnels tels que notamment le platine, le palladium, le rhodium contenus dans les couches nid d'abeille ou maillées du noyau à structure matricielle (34). Ce pot catalytique (1030) de tubulure arrière est maintenu en place au moyen de dispositifs ad-hoc (38), notamment des pinces, des vis de montage et des colliers de serrage. Le pot catalytique de tubulure arrière comporte également un détendeur (1050') de contre-pression. Enfin, ce pot catalytique de tubulure arrière convient également à d'autres types de véhicules tels que les camions, les motocycles ou à d'autres moteurs à compression de gaz, par exemple, ceux des tondeuses à gazon.
