IMPROVED CAM-ACTUATED BRAKE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The cam-actuated brake of the present invention comprises a multiple-piece support plate (14, 32) secured together by anchor pins (24), each anchor pin (24) extend- ing through an associated enlarged opening (38) in an end of a brake shoe (10, 12) and having a shoulder (37) dis- posed axially adjacent a groove (35) in the pin. Rein- forcement plates (50) shaped complementary with the ends of the brake shoes (10, 12) are welded thereto in order to substantially increase the contact area at the end (39) of each brake shoe (10, 12) engaged by the cam end (43), the head or end (43) of the cam actuator being substantially diamond shaped. An anchor brace (70) has through openings (72) receiving the pins (24) so that the brace (70) is axially trapped and immobilized between a shoulder (37) and a clip ring member (80) disposed in the groove (35) of the respective pin. The anchor brace (70) axially immobi- lizes the head (43) of the cam actuator, and the reinforce- ment plates (50) improve the strength and area of the ends (39) of the brake shoes (10, 12) engaged by the diamond- shaped end (43).
