The power required to search a content addressable memory (CAM) (400) is substantially reduced by forming the CAM (400) to have a number of CAM banks (BKO-BKs) with a corresponding number of power switches (SWO-SWs) that control power to the CAM banks (BKO-BKs), and then controlling the power to search the CAM banks (BKO-BKs) one at a time.
