ABSTRACT A combined infra-red and visible light camouflage system is achieved by superimposing two materials, one being a selective absorber of visible light and the other a reflector of infra-red radiation. These materials are chosen so that the material on the observed side of the system (closer to the observer) is substantially transparent to the kind of radiation that interacts with the material on the non-observed side (further from the observer.) When the selective absorber of visible light is on the observed side it may comprise one of red iron oxide, Prussian Blue, cadmium sulphide, cadmium selenosulphide or chromium oxide dispersed in a matrix of polyethylene, whilst the reflector of infra-red radiation is a reflective metal surface, especially an aluminium coating. When the selective absorber of visible light is on the non observed side it again may comprise one of the aforementioned pigments in a polyethylene matrix, however the reflector of infra-red radiation now comprises one of lanthanum hexaboride, stannic oxide or mixed oxides of antimony, cadmium, indium and tin dispersed in a matrix of a polyurethane transparent to visible light.
