-11- CAN CRUSHER ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A can crusher for use in a commercial establishment or the like for crushing relatively large numbers of cans with an electric motor drive includes a pair of conical disk members arranged face-to-face at a shallow angle so that the conical surfaces define a nip line and diverge angularly away from the nip line. Only one of the disk members is driven by a belt drive system. Both disk members carry radially extended ribs on the front crushing surface so that the rotation of the driven disk member is communicated to the other disk member through the gear action provided by the ribs. The ribs also act to grasp a can drawn into the nip line for crushing. The non-driven disk member is mounted for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis and spring biased into engagement with the driven disk member but can move away to accommodate foreign objects. An elongate tube with flared lower end feeds the cans into the area of the disk members opposite to the nip line.
