GA1-4C-6461 CAN END MAKING APPARATUS Abstract of the Disclosure Apparatus is disclosed for making ends for metal or composite can bodies, which ends are first partially formed in a press to a cup-shaped configuration including a peripheral skirt and are then fed to a curling machine in which the skirt is contoured to facilitate application of the end to a can body. The press has a vertically reciprocable slide or slides which, together with an opposed portion of the press frame, support pairs of cooperable dies for blanking and partially forming can ends from sheet material fed horizontally into the press. Thereafter, the partially formed can ends are displaced into a horizontal plane vertically spaced from the sheet feed line, and a kicker member associated with each die set is operable in coordination with slide movement to impact against and propel the partially formed can end laterally and into a guide chute leading either to a curling machine or to an endless conveyor by which the partially formed can end is delivered to a curl- ing machine. In two embodiments, the press frame and slide support two sets of cooperable dies, each set being associated with a corresponding kicker member, guide chute and curling machine, and in which the kicker members, dies and guide chutes are linearly aligned with respect to the entrance to the corresponding curling machine, In another embodiment, the slides and bed of an underdriven double action press are provided with a plurality of sets of cooperable dies offset with respect to one another in the direction between the oppo- site sides of the slides and in the direction between the opposite ends of the slides, and kicker members are supported on the press frame and on opposite sides of the slides to propel partially formed can ends laterally outwardly from the dies toward both sides of the press, Endless conveyor belts are provided along both sides of the press frame and have upper and lower runs in the direction between the ends of the press, and guide chutes are supported between the die sets and the conveyor belts so that the partially formed can ends are propelled onto both the upper and lower runs at each side of the press. Curling machines are supported adjacent the ends of the upper and lower runs of each belt to receive partially formed can ends being conveyed on the correspond- ing belt run,
