The present invention provides a can opening device appropriate for use with a container having a tab associated with the top thereof. The device comprises a housing; a retaining mechanism pivotally connected to the housing which is for holding the container in a desired position during opening, a hook unit for connection to the tab of the container to be opened, a flexible cord connected to the hook unit and a leveraging portion which is connected to the housing, wherein one end of the leveraging portion is connected to the end of the flexible cord opposite the hook unit. Upon the application of a force to the leveraging portion, this force is transmitted through the flexible cord to the tab, thereby rotating the tab and opening the container.
