Cooling of the rotor in the rotor chamber of a canned motor for centrifugal pumps or other fluid flow machines which serve to convey explosive liquids is ensured by installing in the rotor chamber a heat exchanger which receives liquid from the plenum chamber of the fluid flow machine or receives a fluid from another outside source. The rotor chamber is filled with liquid which is admitted from the plenum chamber of the machine and can leak from the rotor chamber by way of a flow restricting outlet. The outlet permits escape of gases when the machine is started but limits the leakage of liquid which fills the rotor chamber. The outlet can admit leaking liquid into the suction chamber of the fluid flow machine. Clogging of the outlet with solid impurities does not affect the cooling of the rotor because the outlet is necessary primarily when the machine is started, namely when it is necessary to expel gases from the rotor chamber so that the latter can be filled with liquid from the fluid flow machine.
