A bridge arrangement for supporting a fuelling machine for a nuclear reactor has one main tower which supports the bridge as a cantilever. A counterweight tower, adjacent the main tower, carries a counterweight which is substantially equal in weight to the weight of the bridge plus fuelling machine. The bridge is mounted to the main tower, and the counterweight is mounted to the counterweight tower, using rollers to provide for vertical movement with a minimum of friction. A vertical ball screw in both towers engages respective nuts on the bridge and the counterweight. Gears couple the two ball screws together so that when the bridge is raised the counterweight is lowered, and vice versa. While the bending forces change with the position of the fuelling machine along the bridge, the actual weight does not change. Thus the weight on the screw in the main tower does not change as it would do in one tower of a pair of supporting towers. Because of the counterweight, much less power is required to raise the bridge.
