The cap is especially useful for sealing a coffee jar and includes a sealing membrane (25) having a surface provided with adhesive for adhesion across the mouth of a jar when the cap is screwed down on the jar. The membrane (25) is held between a circumferential ring (17) on the cap skirt (12) and an end portion (23) of an annular sealing member (20), the end portion (23) being in a radial plane of the skirt. The member (20) resiliently engages the rim of the jar for resealing after the membrane is broken. The need for a weak adhesive to adhere the membrane in the cap is avoided.
