To prevent surface water penetrating into a shaft, the invention calls for a cap (5) with a hollow body (9) made of water- tight material to be fitted over the end of the shaft, the cavity in the hollow body (9) being joined via ducts (11) with the part of the shaft below the cap. Located in the ducts (11) are closure elements (12) consisting of buoyant spheres acting in conjunction with a valve seat (13), the spheres closing off the ducts (11) in the cap body (9) if the water level in the cap body rises.
