A capacitive gauge for measuring wave heights comprises a probe capacitor which is periodically discharged and charged through two comparison voltage levels to produce at the output of a comparison circuit a precise pulse sequence. The pulse sequence is integrated to provide a signal accurately and linearly dependent upon the capacitance of the probe capacitor and hence on a wave height to be measured. The probe capacitor can comprise a partially-immersed insulated vertical wire for measuring large or very small wave heights, or a horizontal conductor above and spaced from the fluid surface for measuring very small wave heights without disturbing the fluid surface.
