ABSTRACT A device and method are described for filling a capillary collection device with fill rates in excess of those obtained by a device having only a capillary spacing between opposed walls. The enhancement results from sandwiching between those walls, with an optional compression of the material, a wettable foam material having an open-cell foam the cells of which have extreme high porosity and filamentary connections between cells which are free of cell membranes between filaments. The foam material is also selected to readily release phases of the liquid, which can be separated in situ by centrifugal force.
