23443-449 Abstract of the Disclosure A capped polyphenylene ether prepared from a poly- phenylene ether containing units of the general formula Image or from a mixture of such ethers, wherein Q1 and Q2 are, for example, alkyl radicals having 1 to 10 carbon atoms and Q3 and Q4 are the same radicals as Q1 and Q2 or are hydrogen atoms, by reacting 100 parts by weight of the ether at a temperature of 230 to 330°C with 0.5 to 10 parts by weight of a malonic acid deri- vative of the formula Image in which R1 and R2 are aromatic or aliphatic radicals having 1 to 25 carbon atoms or hydrogen and A is, for example, oxygen. The capped ethers, which are useful as components of moulding composi- tions possess an improved oxidative and thermal stability. The process of capping is simple to carry out and uses capping agents which are neither aggressive nor corrosive.
