ABSTRACT Disclosed is a new and more efficient process for producing carbapenem antibiotic derivatives having a 2- substituent of the general formula S-A-R14 wherein A represents cyclopentylene, cyclohexylene or C2-C6 alkylene optionally substituted by one or more C1-C4 alkyl groups and R14 represents a quaternized nitrogen-containing aromatic or non-aromatic heterocycle attached to A through a quaternary nitrogen atom.
