These ligands have the formula (I) wherein each of the saccharide rings shown is connected at its 1-position to the next saccharide at its 3-position or 4-position and wherein at least one of A and B is (II) wherein R4 is -(CHOH)3H, H, alkyl containing 1 to 6 carbons, CHO, or perfluoroalkyl containing 1 to 6 carbons; R5 is H, alkyl containing 1 to 6 carbons, COCH3, COCH2OH or COCF3; R6 is H, or an alkyl containing 1 to 6 carbons; each D is independently H, or a galactosyl or fucosyl residue, wherein at least one D is an .alpha.-fucosyl connected to the 3-position or 4-position of the sugar to which it is bound; each R3 is independently selected from the group consisting of OH and NAc; n is an integer of from 0 to 10; and each X is selected from the group consisting of O, S, and NR6 or the X in the sugar at the reducing terminus may represent the corresponding dialcohol at C-1 and C-5.
