A B S T R A C T The invention relates to the production of carbon composite materials from carbon recovered from the pot linings of aluminium reduction cells. The composites are bound with a binder material based on an alkaline-catalysable furan binder. Residual alkaline contaminants in the recovered carbon catalyse, at least in part, the curing reaction. The products are useful as replacement pot linings and in other applications especially in aluminium reduction cells.
