A carbon composite structure, for example, an automotive engine piston, is made by preparing a matrix comprised essentially of a mixture of non crystalline particulate soluble in an organic solvent and a binder that has a liquid phase. The non crystalline particulate also contains residual carbon hydrogen bonding. An uncured structured is formed by combining the matrix mixture, for example, carbon fibers such as graphite dispersed in the mixture and/or graphite cloth imbedded in the mixture. The uncured structure is cured by pyrolyzing it in an inert atmosphere such as argon. Advantagesoulsy, the graphite reinforcement material is whiskered prior to combining it with the matrix mixture by a method involving passing a gaseous metal suboxide over the graphite surface.

L'invention concerne une structure composite en carbone, par exemple, un piston de moteur automobile, réalisée grâce à la préparation d'une matrice essentiellement constituée d'un mélange de particules non cristallines solubles dans un solvant organique et d'un liant renfermant une phase liquide. Ces particules non cristallines renferment également un reste de liaison carbone-hydrogène. Une structure non cuite est formée en combinant le mélange de la matrice, par exemple, des fibres de carbone, telles que du graphite, dispersées dans le mélange et/ou une toile de graphite contenue dans le mélange. Cette structure non cuite est cuite grâce à une pyrolyse se déroulant dans une atmosphère inerte telle que de l'argon. De façon avantageuse, le matériau de renforcement en graphite est transformé en filaments avant d'être combiné au mélange de la matrice grâce à un procédé consistant à faire passer un sous-oxyde métallique gazeux sur la surface du graphite.
