A composition use in preparing an ordered carbon- containing material includes a-binder phase having at least one polymerisable resin and particles of solid material that are wetted by the binder phase. The binder phase may optionally include a polymerisation promoter and/or a solvent. The granulometry of the solid particles, the viscosity of the binder phase and the relative amounts of solid and binder phase are controlled such that through mixing of the solid particles and binder phase results in a thin layer of binder phase coating the particles. Pyrolysis of the resulting mixture at 800 - 1,200 °C will produce an ordered, carbon-containing material. The method for preparing articles from the composition includes mixing the binder phase and solid particles, shaping to a desired shape, curing and pyrolysing at 800 - 1,200 °C. Ordered, carbon-containing materials are obtained at much lower temperature than previously and the carbon-containing materials so obtained are resistant to disruption by alkali metals such as sodium. The composition and method are especially suitable for preparing cathodes for use in aluminium smelting cells.
Composition utilisée pour la préparation d'un matériau ordonné renfermant du carbone. Cette composition inclut une phase liante renfermant au moins une résine polymérisable et des particules de matière solide qui sont mouillées par la phase liante. Cette phase liante peut facultativement renfermer un promoteur de polymérisation et/ou un solvant. La granulométrie des particules solides, la viscosité de la phase liante et les quantités relatives des phases solide et liante sont régulées de telle sorte que, par un mélange intime des particules solides et de la phase liante on obtient une mince couche de phases liante revêtant les particules. La pyrolyse du mélange résultant, à une température de 800 à 1200 DEG C, donne un matériau ordonné renfermant du carbone. Le procédé d'élaboration d'articles à partir de cette composition consiste à mélanger la phase liante et les particules solides, à leur conférer la forme souhaitée avant de les soumettre à un durcissement et à une pyrolyse à une température comprise entre 800 à 1200 DEG C. On obtient des matériaux ordonnés renfermant du carbone à une température beaucoup plus basse qu'antérieurement, et les matériaux ainsi obtenus résistent à l'action disruptive des métaux alcalins tels que le sodium. Cette composition et ce procédé sont particulièrement appropriés pour la fabrication de cathodes utilisées dans les cellules de fusion de l'aluminium.
