A method for purifying a mixture comprising single-wall carbon nanotubes and amorphous carbon contaminate is disclosed. The method includes the steps of heating the mixture under oxidizing conditions sufficient to remove the amorphous carbon, followed by recovering a product comprising at least about 80 % by weight of single-wall carbon nanotubes. A method for producing tubular carbon molecules of about 5 to 500 nm in length is also disclosed. The method includes the steps of cutting single-wall nanotube containing-material to form a mixture of tubular carbon molecules having lengths in the range of 5- 500 nm and isolating a fraction of the molecules having substantially equal lengths. The nanotubes may be used, singularly or in multiples, in power transmission cables, in solar cells, in batteries, as antennas, as molecular electronics, as probes and manipulators, and in composites.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de purifier un mélange contenant des nanotubes en carbone à paroi simple et des impuretés de carbone amorphe. Ce procédé comporte l'étape de chauffage du mélange dans des conditions d'oxydation suffisantes pour extraire le carbone amorphe, et ensuite l'étape de récupération d'un produit contenant au moins 80 % en poids de nanotubes en carbone à paroi simple. L'invention concerne également un procédé de production de molécules de carbone tubulaires dont la longueur est située entre environ 5 et 500 nm. Ce procédé comporte, d'une part, l'étape de coupe d'une matière contenant des nanotubes à paroi simple en vue de former un mélange de molécules de carbone tubulaires dont les longueurs sont situées entre 5 et 500 nm et, d'autre part, l'étape d'isolement d'une fraction des molécules présentant des longueurs sensiblement égales. Les nanotubes peuvent être utilisés, individuellement ou en groupe, dans des câbles de transmission d'énergie, dans des piles solaires, dans des batteries, en tant qu'antennes, composants électroniques moléculaires, sondes et manipulateurs et dans des composites.
