ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A carbon monoxide detecting device is disclosed which exhibits a step-wise change in film current over a pre- selected range in carbon monoxide concentration and is very suitable for use with a warning device. A preferred embodiment of the detector comprises an insulating substrate, a first film predominantly of stannic oxide on said insulating substrate wherein a donor selected from antimony and bismuth is incorpor- ated therein, a second film predominantly of platinum formed on the first film, and a film intermediate the first and second film, which intermediate film predominantly comprises stanic oxide and has an acceptor selected from the group con- sisting of platinum, aluminum and boron. The first, intermediate, and second films are formed, for example, by a high frequency reactive sputtering method.
