ABSTRACT A thin film magnetic disc having a carbon overcoat which is characterized by (a) a thickness of less than about 500 .ANG., (b) long resistance-to-erosion time, and (c) high lubricity, as characterized by (i) a high carbon to oxygen ratio on the surface, (ii) a large bead angle at which a water bead first begins to glide on the overcoat surface, and (iii) a low dynamic coefficient of friction, oven after surface wear. Also disclosed is a method of evaluating the wear resistance of the overcoat, and a sputtering method which uses wear-resistance data so determined to optimize conditions for producing the thin film medium.
