The invention concerns novel refractory materials. More especially, the invention concerns agglomerated or fused cast bodies of refractory oxides, having their surface and pores covered with an adherent and compact carbon layer, said bodies presenting an improved resistance to molten slags and metals. These bodies are obtained by treating refractory bodies in a methane and hydrogen atmosphere at high temperature. These are usable as parts or linings of furnaces to be in contact with molten slags or metals.
