RD-11,083 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A carbonate process comprising contacting an alcohol, a phenol, carbon monoxide in the presence of a base, and a Group VIIIB element selected from ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium or platinum. The resulting mono- and polycarbonates are useful in the preparation of polycarbonates or as polycarbonates, per se, respectively, which can be molded or formed into films, sheets, fibers, laminates or reinforced plastics by conventional techniques.
