A carbothermic process for producing an aluminium carbide containing mass by injecting carbon and alumina into molten aluminium superheated above 14000C. The carbon reacts with molten aluminium to produce an aluminium carbide and alumina mass. The mass can be heated in the range of 17000C to 20000C to produce aluminium metal and carbon monoxide.

L'invention concerne un procédé carbothermique permettant de produire une masse contenant du carbure d'aluminium par injection de carbone et d'alumine dans de l'aluminium en fusion surchauffé à une température supérieure à 1400 °C. Le carbone réagit avec l'aluminium en fusion de façon à obtenir une masse de carbure d'aluminium et d'alumine. Ladite masse peut être chauffée dans la plage comprise entre 1700 °C et 2000 °C afin d'obtenir de l'aluminium métallique et du monoxyde de carbone.
