ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel propane derivatives, useful in the treatment of arterios- clerosis, and related diseases, of the formula Image [IV] and pharmaceutically acceptable salts there?f wherein R1 is the group OR', and R' is a hydrogen or an alkali metal atom, or a lower alkyl, hydroxy substituted lower alkyl or lower alkoxy radical; or the group Image wherein R'' and R''' may independently be a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or lower hydroxy alkyl radical or taken together form a heterocylic radical; X is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl, carboxyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkoxy carbonyl or carbamoyl radical; Z is oxygen or sulphur; Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a lower alkyl group when Z is sulfur, or Y is a hydrogen or a halogen atom or a lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, hydroxyl, aralkoxy, carboxyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl, or a cyano radical when 2 is oxygen; and R3 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or acyl group; may be prepared by a process which comprises (a) hydrolyzing a compound of formula Image [III] wherein X, Y and Z are as defined above; (b) treating a compound of formula [III] as defined above with an alcohol of the formula R2OH wherein R2 is a lower alkyl, or hydroxy substituted lower alkyl; or (c) treating a compound of formula [III] as defined above with an amine of the formula Image wherein R'' and R''' are as defined above; or (d) treating a compound of formula [IV] as defined above wherein R3 is hydrogen and X, Y, Z and R1 are as defined above with an acylating agent; or (e) treating a compound of formula [IV] as defined above wherein R3 is hydrogen and X, Y, Z and R1 are as defined above with an alkylating agent.
