C A R B U R E T O R ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Carburetor for mixing air and fuel particularly for use in automotive internal combustion engines. Carburetor has throat and fuel spray tube extending into throat to receive and discharge fuel into throat. Valve assembly has first and second sliding gate valve members which cooperate with fuel spray tube as they slide transversely across throat between closed and wide open positions. Valve actuating means, such as rack and pinion or link and arm mechanism, couple valve members together to move them equal amounts in opposite dir- ections. Fuel metering means preferrably coupled to valve members meters flow of fuel through spray tube in amounts proportional to valve opening. In one embodiment fuel spray tube has air bleed and discharge jet means spaced along tube, the jets being closed by valve members as valve members appraoch each other. Air bleed jets admit portion of ram air into manifold within fuel spray tube for primary mixing to form rich mixture, which then discharges from spray tube into throat for further mixing with air flowing past fuel spray tube to produce desired leaner mixture. In one embodiment spray tube is parallel to movement of valve member, in second embodiment it is normal to movement of valve members. In further embodiment, fuel spray tube extends to middle of throat and is enclosed by one valve member in sliding fit. Tapered fuel needle extending from other valve member meters fuel by restricting flow through central passage of tube. - 1 -
