A cardan shaft comprises a first shaft and a second shaft, connected to one another via a constant velocity slip joint. The second shaft comprises two shaft sections connected to one another by connecting means. The connecting means is adapted to fail mechanically upon the application of a threshold axial force such that the two shaft sections can slide coaxially into one other. The constant velocity slip joint and the connecting means are configured such that upon the application of a first threshold axial force, the constant velocity slip joint is pushed together along a first sliding path until blocked, and that subsequently, upon the application of a threshold second axial force, the two shaft sections telescope together along a second sliding path. The threshold first axial force is smaller than the threshold second axial force.
