ABSTRACT The present invention provides cardenolide-bis- digitoxosides of the general formula:- Image (I) wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or an acyloxy radical containing up to 3 carbon atoms and R2, R3 and R4, which can be the same or different, are hydrogen atoms, acyl radicals containing up to 3 carbon atoms or alkyl radicals containing up to 3 carbon atoms, with the proviso that the compounds contain at least one alkyl radical. The present invention also provides processes for the preparation of these compounds and pharmaceutical compositions containing them. Furthermore, the present invention is concerned with the use of these compounds for the treatment of cardiac insufficiency.
