The present invention is directed to a cardiac assist device for assisting with the function of a heart (20). The assist device includes a compressor (102) positioned adjacent the epicardial wall of the heart (20). The compressor (102) is driven by one or more electroactive polymer actuators (110). The pressure exerted against the heart (20) improves heart function.
