ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a method of generating output pulses in timed relation to externally sensed pulses and to a cardiac pacing apparatus. The method comprises digitally timing the interval between sensed pulses, generating an escape interval value and generating an output pulse following a sensed pulse. The apparatus is based inter alia on this method and comprises a pacer input means, a pacer output means and a means for coupling the input and output means to a patient's heart, a digital data processor and a read only memory. The method and apparatus are particularly suitable for preventing and treating arrhythemias such as atrial tachycardia involving accelerated heartbeat rates.
