ABSTRACT Cardiac Valve Prosthesis The mechanical cardiac valve prostheses used conventionally comprise a tiltable valvular closing body pivotally supported in a valve ring (10) whose shape is substantially determined by the closing geometry of the closing body. Due to the shape of the inner face of the valve ring, vortices may develop in flowing blood which, at the boundary of the discharged jet, may reduce the blood velocity in flow direction, on the one hand, and which may favor thrombus formation and blood damaging shearing stress on the other hand. The flow resistance caused by the valve ring is relatively high due to the occurring flow separation in the valve ring and the resultant jet contraction. In case of the cardiac valve prosthesis of the invention, the inner area (10a) of the valve ring (10) has an opening cross section continuously decreasing in flow direction, the valve ring being shaped like a nozzle, and a flow disrupture only occurring at the nozzle end allowing a concentric flow discharge, while a vortex formation at the jet boundary and inside the flow is inhibited to a far extent. As a result, flow resistance is clearly reduced and blood damage is minimized. Further, the joint (13) is improved in that a flushing channel (18) traverses the joint cavity (16) in order to avoid deposits of blood particles in the valvular joint. (Fig. 2)
