ABSTRACT A cargo handling apparatus for cold storage holds of fishing vessels is provided. An overhead crane conveys cargo units suspended by a flexible sheet member within the storage hold. An auxiliary carriage member is detachably mounted in the flexible sheet member and engages a hook of the overhead crane. A traverse conveying track is provided along which the overhead crane travels. A vertical conveying track has a lower end portion disposed adjacent to a leading end of the traverse conveying track and an upper end portion extending up to the deck of the vessel. The cargo is conveyed along the traverse conveying track and then automatically transported and elevated by the vertical conveying track. Cargo units may be aggregated and stored covered with the flexible sheet member and, to transfer the cargo units to the deck, the auxiliary carriage member is set with the flexible sheet member for automatic transportation and elevation to minimize or eliminate crew worker's presence in the cold storage hold.
