ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In forming a woven carpet a sheet of plastics material is slit into a plurality of strips which are then woven into the backing of the carpet to form the set of warp threads. The sheet is tensioned after being slit into strips and before being passed to the heald frame of a loom. Tensioning is done by three rollers braked or biased together, the strips being fed over the first roller under the second roller and over the third roller, the second roller being braked and also biased downwardly to tension the strips. The strips are not separated to their required spacing until after they have passed through the tensioning means.
