A hand transportable carrier for would coils of filamentary material permitting the retaining of coils of e.g. telephone wire or cable having different diameters. This enables the wire or cable to be drawn from the inside of the coil while the coil is retained in the carrier by slidable, spaced, carriage assemblies. The height of the carriages is simultaneously adjustable to accommodate different diameter would coils. A pair of filamentary material guide cones is provided. One removably engages one of the carriage assemblies and is inserted into the adjacent open end of the wound coil. The other guide cone removably engages the opposite carriage assembly and is inserted into the other adjacent open end of the wound coil. The invention provides the advantage that the carrier is easily and readily adaptable to retain different diameter wound coils to be unwound in situ at a workplace.
