A fuel filter element which includes an annular filter media having sealed end faces covered by end plates has a cylindrical valve operating detest which is a discrete component from the rest of the fuel filter structure. The cylindrical detest is mounted within the hollow core of the annular filter media by a radially extending mounting. support which does not extend substantially beyond the hollow core of the filter element. In a first embodiment, the radial mounting support is a metal member which supports a plastic cylindrical detest. In a second embodiment, the cylindrical detent is unitary with the radially extending mounting support, both being molded of plastic. In a third embodiment, the cylindrical detest is unitary with the radial mounting support which is, in turn, unitary with a perforated tube which supports the filter media. By using these detest arrangements, standard filter element structure is utilized, resulting in considerable cost savings.
