A method of producing an aqueous chemical species solution by the dissolution of particulate chemical species in water, the method comprising (a) passing feed water through a first particulate chemical species-containing chamber to produce a first chemical species solution; (b) passing the first chemical species solution through a second particulate chemical species-containing chamber to produce a second chemical species solution; (c) passing the second chemical species solution through a third particulate chemical species-containing chamber to produce a third chemical species solution; wherein the chemical species-containing chambers are vertically aligned parallel each to the other chambers to define an outer chamber surrounding an intermediate chamber, and the intermediate chamber surrounding an inner chamber. The process utilizes apparatus having a chemical species-containing cartridge that is compact and provides for a more reliable stream of saturated chemical species solution over the all desired temperature. The invention apparatus and process is particularly useful in producing saturated iodine solutions, for subsequent dilute with water to produce a diluted iodine solution of known concentration for addition to drinking water, swimming pools and the like as an antibacterine, disinfectant and the like.
