ABSTRACT An analog-to-digital converter for converting an analog signal, which varies between two values Vm and VM' to a digital gray code. The converter comprises cascaded stages which each supply a part of the code and another analog signal for the following stage. Each stage has connected to its input a comparison unit at whose output a digital signal appears which represents part of the code and a transfer element which presents a piece-wise linear transfer characteristic and which produces the analog output signal of the stage. The converter is characterized in that at least the first stage, to whose input the analog signal is applied, is provided with a compari- son unit with at least two comparators which supply comparison data with respect to the reference values situated on either side of an average value situated between Vm and VM and a trans- fer element whose transfer characteristic shows point of discontinuity for the values which are practically equal to the reference values. This converter is used in word coding systems for large scale digital transmission.
