ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved cashbox which may be used to replace the coinbox 2 on conventional newspaper vending machines including, but not limited to, K-80 type display racks. The cashbox includes a housing having a front wall and two side walls extending from the front wall. A substantially L-shaped removable service plate covers a back portion and a top portion of the housing when the service plate is in a closed position. The side walls of the housing have notched corners at a top of the back portion of the housing for supporting the service plate in an open position. The cashbox may also include an electronic coin mechanism for receiving coins from a front face of the front wall and an electronic bill acceptor and validator also for receiving bills from the front face of the housing. At least one of these money receptacles may be removably secured to an inside wall of the housing by a strap which may have a hinge at one end and a releasable latch at the other end. A removable tray or shelf may extend between the two side walls of the housing for stiffening the housing and for supporting a battery which powers powering at least one of the receptacles. The cashbox may also include a switch that signals when the service plate is in the open position and means for indicating a low battery voltage in response to a signal from the switch. A slidably removable money tray may be arranged near a bottom portion of the housing for receiving money from at least one of the money receptacles.
