Disclosed is a cassette having a plate-like form for use as a carrier for fixing activated sludge thereto in a fixed-bed type activated sludge treatment of sewage or industrial waste water, the said cassette (i) being constructed of a porous ceramic material or (ii) being filled with a porous shaped filler made of a ceramic material, wherein the porous ceramic material and the porous shaped filler have three dimensional pores with a pore size of 1 to 5 mm and the ceramic material comprises 50 to 90% by weight of granulated blast furnace slag and the balance of a ceramic material other than the granulated blast, furnace slag.
