ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cast iron composition is disclosed which is especially suitable for production of ingot moulds. The composition which provides good resistance to deterioration during thermal cycling comprises 3.7 to 4.0% carbon, not more than 1.6% Si, 0.40 to 0.80% Mn, 0.010 to 0.045% P, not more than 0.010% S, O.20 to 0.050% Mg with the balance being Fe.
